Taos Herbal Cooperative
How are we cultivating this network?
A yearly herbal seed exchange to onboard a cooperative of organic farmers, wildcrafters, herbalists, and craftspeople for a moderate membership fee to maintain this work.
Weekly herb exchanges in which growers and wildcrafters sell their fresh herbs to the coop in the morning and members purchase the fresh herbs in the afternoon.
Agreed upon and collectively developed best practices for cultivating and harvesting towards the protection of the medicine and the earth that gives it to us.
Establishing a forum for collaboration, education, and bioregional ecological resilience.
What is a shared apothecary?
A physical space hosting herb exchanges and processing of excess fresh herbs to preserve medicine for future exchanges.
An online portal highlighting educational and collaborative opportunities within the network and bioregion.
Who is the cooperative?
A cooperative council maintains the structure, organization, and apothecary.
The cooperative network, comprised of local growers, wildcrafters, and herbalists, feeds and utilizes the weekly exchange and apothecary.
All members of the cooperative pay membership dues and agree to best practices.
Why is this needed?
Localizing medicinal knowledge and access is important to reduce dependence on outsourcing health. Having a back stock of dried, local herbs can be a lifeline to the greater community if external supply chains are ever disrupted.
Harvesting and cultivating local medicine encourages a bioregional stewardship ethic.
Membership
While each member of this cooperative contributes to the vitality of the whole, each membership fee supports the structure and maintenance of the apothecary.
